Utah, 1848-1866 "It was in May 1848 that the James Russell Ivie family, consisting of James Russell, his wife Eliza, and nine of their eleven children began plans for moving westward. Two of their sons were with the Mormon Battalion. On June 1, 1848, the Ivies left Elkhorn in the company of the Saints with 1,229 souls and 397 wagons and began the journey to the Great Salt Lake Valley. They were in Brigham Young's second company. The parents of Eliza also came with this company. James Russell Ivie's outfit was well equipped with good wagons and teams. His son Richard's wife, Elizabeth Dobson Ivie, was with them. They reached Great Salt Lake Valley about September 20, 1848, and spent the winter in Salt Lake City where Hyrum Lewis Ivie was born February 25, 1849. They soon moved to Provo and then on to Kamas. However, they were not satisfied with their location so traveled to Mt. Pleasant then moved to Scipio in 1863. At that time the settlers were still in Graball or Robinsville which was situated on a river. Further down in the valley it separated into two streams, and it was on the east stream that Mr. Ivie and family finally settled. The stream became known as Ivie Creek. Not long after this, President Young visited the people in this vicinity and advised them to move closer together on a townsite in the valley. It was first called Round Valley, but later changed to Scipio. The Ivies were the first family to build homes on the new townsite." 22 | |
