The three pictures above are tintypes. The originals each measure 3.5 by 2.5 inches. The edges are not quite cut straight. The picture of the baby has three of the corners trimmed. The right and bottom edges of the picture of the young man go beyond the edge of the image.
Tintypes were invented in 1853 and became very popular due to their durability and low cost. They reached their height of popularity in the 1890s. A photographer could produce up to twelve images on a single plate. Tin shears were used to separate the photos which led to the name "tintypes". The image on the tintype was laterally reversed so the image was like looking in a mirror.
