The Seurer family came from the region of Germany between Coblenz and Trier north of the Mozelle river and west of the Rhine. Most of the family of Johann Joseph Seurer and Anna Maria Hoffman emigrated to Wisconsin in 1852.
We pronounce Seurer like Sawyer.

notes that the Seurer's from the Hoven area pronounce
Seurer as if it were "Sigh-er" (or maybe "Sire") with the long "i" a bit
clipped.
This fits perfectly with the dialect of German spoken there where the "eu"
that is usually the "oy" sound in German is pronounced with this "clipped long i" sound instead.
Pronouncing it like "Sawyer"
turns out to be fairly close to "high" German but in Germany they don't drop the middle "r".

The "eu" in Seurer is like
the "oy" in oyster. Both r's are heard, but the pronouniation
of the r in German is quite different from any r in
English. (There are several ways of pronounciation
of the r in German anyway, depending on the region).
Seurer may stem from
the French word "serurier" which means "locksmith" in
English.
